ANBERRA, February
13, 2008 -- The Australian government has apologized for its past treatment
of the country's native people, the Aborigines. Lawmakers unanimously adopted
a motion by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to say sorry on behalf of all Australians.
Wednesday's vote in parliament was broadcast live on TV and watched by crowds
on giants screens set up in cities. Tens of thousands of Aborigines were
forcibly taken from their families as children under past assimilation policies.
